Hidden Health Risks of Conventional Home Fragrance Products

A 2023 study conducted by the Environmental Health Research Institute found that everyday fragrance products like candles, plug-ins, and sprays can release harmful chemicals called VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into the air. These include toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene—the same pollutants found in car exhaust! Over time, they can trigger headaches, allergies, and even disrupt your hormones. Participants who frequently burned candles or used plug-ins reported a 32% increase in allergy-like symptoms such as watery eyes, coughing, and sinus congestion. Many people who suffered from watery eyes, coughing, or congestion and never suspect their “fresh” scents are to blame. Even products labeled “natural” often hide synthetic fragrance oils that pollute the air when heated or sprayed. The truth is, these quick-fix fresheners only mask odors while compromising the quality of the air you breathe and your long-term health. Researchers recommended plant-based alternatives and passive fragrance solutions that release aroma gradually without the smoke, residue, or harsh chemicals. This approach offers a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable way to create a pleasant, balanced atmosphere in your space. Fresh air should feel as good as it smells—choose fragrance that’s beautiful, breathable, and better for you.
